The Building Inclusive Communities (MetroAccess) program is a key initiative of the Victorian Government's Department of Health and Human Services' State Disability Plan 2013-2016. The plan, which commenced in 2002, sets out the government’s shared goals for developing a fairer Victoria, making it easier for people with a disability to get around and join in activities in their local community.

The program brings together the strengths, resources and creativity of individuals, communities and government to work in partnership to build long-term, sustainable change in local communities.

Funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, MetroAccess, along with its rural counterparts RuralAccess and DeafAccess, make up the Disability Services Community Building Program.

MetroAccess in Boroondara

The overall objectives of MetroAccess are to assist our community to include people with a disability and their families and carers by:

  • mobilising and supporting people with a disability to optimise their participation in the local community
  • building and strengthening the community’s capacity to provide support to people with a disability and their families
  • facilitating integrated local planning and coordination to engage and involve people with a disability and their families, disability service providers and community organisations
  • working with existing disability service providers to enhance their capacity to provide relevant and appropriate support in the community
  • improving access to information about the services and community activities available to people with a disability in their communities.

MetroAccess officer

As part of the MetroAccess program, there is a MetroAccess officer at every metropolitan Council.

MetroAccess officers provide support, responses and solutions to key issues experienced by people with disabilities in local communities.

The officers plan, develop and consult on plans and strategies for a range of community services, including education and training, transport, health, accommodation and housing, physical access planning, sport, recreation, and the arts.

Our MetroAccess officer can assist you with issues and priorities in your life, for example:

  • advocacy
  • leadership and civic participation
  • access to built environment
  • culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD)
  • children and youth
  • disability support system (NDIS)
  • education and training
  • employment
  • family and carer support
  • health and wellbeing
  • information and communication technology
  • sport, recreation and leisure
  • transport.
